In Memoriam--Helen Brush Hiscoe
On July 28, 2011, 92 years, born March 10, 1919, Helen's family lost a much-loved wife, mother
and cherished companion. Helen, who lived in East Lansing for the past 55 years, passed away in
Novi, MI following complications after a fall. Professionally, Helen taught at Vassar and then at
Michigan State University in the Natural Science Department for 24 years. Helen provided unlimited
love, support and forbearance for her husband D. Bonta Hiscoe MD, as he pursued the development
and practice of his surgical career. Using the diary she kept during her early adventure as the
wife of a remote coal-camp physician in the hills of West Virginia, Helen authored the
autobiographical book, "Appalachian Passage" (University of Georgia Press), in 1992 that has
been acclaimed by many and read nationally on National Public Radio. She and Bonta traveled
extensively around the globe and the memory of those shared trips will live as a treasure in
Bonta's heart forever. She was a very special lady who touched the lives of so many - she will be
sorely missed.

In Memoriam--Shirley A. Klunzinger
Shirley A. Klunzinger, age 62. Loving and cherished mother to Jeff (Salomea) Klunzinger and
Carolyn (Andrew) Kulpa. Proud and devoted grandmother to Elska and Olivia, who brought joy and
laughter to her life. Treasured and loyal friend to many. Daughter of Richard and Bethany
Kettles. An avid reader, Shirley shared her wealth of knowledge while passionately working
toward the betterment of political and social organizations. Shirley enjoyed spending time playing
and teaching Bridge and the summer months on her SeaCycle on Torch Lake. Shirley faced her battle
with cancer with courage and a sense of humor, both traits she reflected throughout her life. She
will be missed by all who knew her.

Seth Rudman, son of Dr. Ken and Lori Rudman, is a biology student at The University of Rochester
in New York. This fall Seth is involved in a study abroad program through Duke University called
Organization of Tropical Studies. This particular program is based in the Kruger National Park, South
Africa. The emphasis of the program is on ecology and conservation in the different savannas of the
Kruger in addition to studying the abundant wild life and its interaction. We finally heard from
Seth a month into the program and he is really enjoying this fantastic opportunity.
At the September 7, 2008, W3 Sparrow Foundation 5K Run and Walk, the Ingham County Medical Society
Alliance Team won the Team Spirit Award! We are so proud to receive this recognition. And, to make
the recognition even better, we won tickets to a Michigan State University Women's Basketball game
and five (5) large pizzas. Watch for a date in future communications. This will be a "member's
night out"! Thank you all who either participated by walking or supporting the Foundation through
a financial donation.
The Retired Physicians group met for an evening dinner on September 22, 2008 at the Walnut Hills
Country Club. While some physicians are not totally retired, attending this get together was
wonderful. Organizing this event were Buck and Mim Bethards who did an absolutely fabulous job.
Both are previous past presidents of the Medical Society and the Alliance respectively. Dr. Ken
Rudman, current county Medical Society President, gave an overview of plans for the Medical Society
in the coming year. It was a wonderful event!
